The extrovert ideal is not a modern invention. Extraversion is in our DNA – literally, according to some psychologists. The trait has been found to be less prevalent in Asia and Africa than in Europe and America, whose populations descend largely from the migrants of the world. It makes sense, say these researchers, that the world travellers were more extroverted than those who stayed home.1
She traces the outworking of this in a number of settings, Harvard Business School being one of her key examples. Business and commerce are shaped by and around those who are extrovert.
What surprised me when I read her work, though, was not so much her analysis of business, but her sharp perceptiveness about the evangelical part of the church. I have already argued that charismatics do not have to be evangelical, but numerically and culturally most are and through Cain’s eyes we begin to see the depth of cultural domination within which introverts find themselves, particularly because charismatic culture often seems to adopt US culture unthinkingly.
Cain arranges to meet with Adam McHugh (whose own work I also highly recommend and reference elsewhere).2Their conversations result in a chapter entitled “Does God love introverts? An evangelical’s dilemma”.
